MIL-Systems was incorporated in 1987 to provide system engineering and product design services to the Australian defence industry. Since 1992 MIL-Systems has specialised in the design of switch mode power supplies and battery backup systems. In 1994 MIL-Systems started manufacturing its own designs of specialised high value power supplies for the military and communications markets. The power supplies range from 10W to 1.5kW, providing ac/dc and dc/dc conversion for fixed indoor/outdoor and mobile ground/air installations. MIL-Systems has designed and manufactured 8 different power supplies used in various parts of the Australian Army Parakeet communications system.

MIL-Systems is located in West Footscray Victoria, 5km from the centre of Melbourne and adjacent to the Williamstown naval ship building yard and the industrial Western Suburbs. MIL-Systems' office and laboratory accommodates a staff of 17 including engineers, technicians and assemblers. The engineering staff have an aggregate of over 100 years experience designing power electronics products. The facility includes a well equipped R&D laboratory, RF screened room, environmental test chamber, 115Vac 400Hz aircraft supply and an electro-mechanical workshop. The manufacturing area includes plant and equipment for final assembly, test and burn in of MIL-Systems' products. Small volume high quality PCBs are hand loaded and soldered at MIL-Systems. Several contractors are used to load and solder SMD parts and perform high volume wave soldering. The contractors are trained in special areas by MIL Systems and they only use the solder alloys and fluxes specified by MIL-Systems. MIL-Systems always performs the final assembly, test and quality control of all its products.

The MIL-Systems' quality system was initially set up to meet the requirements for military projects. The Army, AWADI and British Aerospace have assisted this process and inspected MIL-Systems to "meet the purposes and intent of MIL-STD-973 Configuration Management". In addition to MIL-STD-973, MIL Systems has adopted many elements of the ISO 9001 quality system and has a longer term plan to integrate the two systems in a cost effective way.
